Got Sick Tools? Get Them Back to Health!

The COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic is an unprecedented circumstance for our current and future economy, and, as with everyone, EXSYS Tool, Inc is faced with an unexpected situation. But we are still focused on your needs, the needs of the manufacturer. We know your production has slowed and are faced with cutbacks, and we’re here to help. If your old tools are feeling under-the-weather, send them to us and we'll get them back to health.

Now’s the time, while production is slow, to take those old tools offline.

While production might be slow now, we know it will pick up again later. This means, this is the best time to inspect and maintain your older tool heads. Shops that regularly inspect and maintain their live tool heads can achieve up to five times more service life and lower overall toolholder costs than those that do not. A live tool system preventive maintenance program ensures part accuracy, increased cutting tool life, reduced scrap, improved reliability and overall confidence in lights-out operations. From a financial perspective, if a shop fails to maintain a live tool head and continues to process parts, the head’s spindle and gears will eventually wear, creating an expensive repair, not to mention scrapped parts.

Inspect, maintain & repair holders before they get sick.

While machine time is slow, we suggest that shops perform a general five-point preventive maintenance inspection and decipher if a tool head should be sent to a properly trained technician to maintain and repair, which will increase the longevity of the tool head. The five-point inspection consists of these five assessments (please keep in mind, if a live tool head is still under warranty, it should not be disassembled completely):

1. Measures spindle runout

2. Check for radial play

3. Check for ease of rotation

4. Make a visual inspection of the live tool head

5. Inspect for coolant contamination

To get the most out of the five-point inspection, it is best for operators to create and make entries in a maintenance log — We offer a template to our customers for this purpose, so you can track a live tool head’s performance throughout the years. Over time, operators will be able to tell when they should remove a live tool head for routine service as well as establish an accurate maintenance budget.

Live heads with minor problems, such as those requiring seal and bearing replacements, should be sent out for service as many times as possible before being discarded. Keep in mind that if a live head suffers a catastrophic crash, it is most likely past the point of inspection.

Again, this is a great time to send out repair needs as standard repairs on live tool heads can take between one and two weeks, while comprehensive repairs can take up to four. This being said, during these uncertain times, we would like to reassure you that our maintenance and repair service department will continue to operate to ensure the best service possible. We are also extending discounts to our valued customers for the next two weeks on your repair service. A 15% discount on all live tool head repairs, or if you are purchasing a new tool, you can get 50% off your maintenance & repair service (cannot be combined).

EXSYS would also like to reassure you that we are taking all necessary steps to ensure the health and well-being of our workforce and customers. We have taken necessary precautions and have created a strict policy to clean and disinfect all work area and merchandise surfaces and all of our repair and packaging staff members must wear gloves when handling merchandise.

We are all in this together, and we are doing our part to #stopthespread of #COVID19 and #flattenthecurve. Let's work together to get through this.
